How to Get Your G1

In Ontario, teenagers can begin their journey toward obtaining a full driver’s license by applying for a G1 license at age 16. Before their actual Birthday they can start the Theory portion of any Driver’s Education Course and then complete their in-car portion once they turn 16 and pass their G1.

Starting early offers numerous benefits, including increased driving experience and potential insurance savings.

How to Get a G1 License in Ontario

To apply for a G1 license, you must:

  • Be at least 16 years old

  • Pass a vision test

  • Pass a written knowledge test on road signs and rules

  • Provide original identification documents showing your legal name and date of birth

  • Pay the applicable fee (approximately $158.25, which includes the vision test, knowledge test, and your first G2 road test)

You can take the knowledge test at any DriveTest Centre without an appointment. We also have a G1 Practice Test on our website for your convenience.

G1 License Restrictions

The G1 license comes with specific conditions to ensure safety:

  • You must always drive with a fully licensed driver (Class G) who has at least four years of driving experience and a blood alcohol level below 0.05%.

  • You must maintain a zero blood alcohol level.

  • Driving is prohibited between midnight and 5 a.m.

  • You cannot drive on 400-series highways or high-speed expressways unless accompanied by a licensed driving instructor.

  • All passengers must wear seatbelts.

Violating these restrictions can lead to penalties, including fines and license suspensions.

Benefits of Getting a G1 License Early

Obtaining your G1 license at 16 offers several advantages:

  • Accelerated Progression: Completing an approved driver education course can reduce the waiting period to take the G2 road test from 12 months to 8 months.

  • Insurance Savings: Completing a government-approved driver’s education program can lead to insurance discounts of 10-25%.

  • Building Driving Experience: Starting early allows you to gain more driving experience under supervision, leading to increased confidence and skill.

  • Establishing a Clean Driving Record: Maintaining a good driving record from the outset can positively impact future insurance premiums.

Insurance Considerations for G1 Drivers

While G1 drivers cannot have their own car insurance policies, they are typically covered under the policy of the accompanying fully licensed driver, often a parent or guardian. It’s important to inform your insurance provider about the new G1 driver to ensure proper coverage.

Final Thoughts

Starting the licensing process early in Ontario not only accelerates your path to full driving privileges but also provides opportunities for insurance savings and valuable driving experience. By adhering to G1 restrictions and completing Driver Education, teenagers can set the foundation for a lifetime of safe driving and up to 10 years of insurance savings.
